The French PM Resigns Following Barely Three Weeks Amid Broad Condemnation of New Cabinet

The French political turmoil has intensified after the recently appointed premier suddenly stepped down within moments of forming a government.

Swift Resignation During Political Instability

Sébastien Lecornu was the third French prime minister in a single year, as the nation continued to stumble from one government turmoil to another. He resigned hours before his initial ministerial gathering on the beginning of the workweek. France's leader received Lecornu's resignation on Monday morning.

Furious Backlash Over New Cabinet

The prime minister had faced strong opposition from opposition politicians when he revealed a new government that was virtually unchanged since last previous month's ousting of his former PM, François Bayrou.

The proposed new government was controlled by Macron's allies, leaving the government almost unchanged.

Opposition Response

Political opponents said the prime minister had reversed on the "profound break" with past politics that he had vowed when he assumed office from the unpopular Bayrou, who was dismissed on 9 September over a planned spending cuts.

Next Political Direction

The question now is whether the head of state will decide to dissolve parliament and call another early vote.

Jordan Bardella, the head of the far-right leader's far-right National Rally party, said: "It's impossible to have a reestablishment of order without a new election and the parliament's termination."

He added, "Evidently the president who decided this government himself. He has misinterpreted of the present conditions we are in."

Election Demands

The far-right party has advocated for another vote, confident they can boost their seats and role in the legislature.

The nation has gone through a phase of turmoil and political crisis since the national leader called an unclear early vote last year. The assembly remains split between the political factions: the left, the far right and the centre, with no absolute dominance.

Financial Deadline

A spending package for next year must be passed within weeks, even though political parties are at disagreement and Lecornu's tenure ended in less than a month.

Opposition Motion

Parties from the left to far right were to hold meetings on the start of the week to decide whether or not to vote to remove Lecornu in a opposition challenge, and it appeared that the administration would collapse before it had even started work. The prime minister apparently decided to leave before he could be dismissed.

Ministerial Appointments

Nearly all of the big government posts announced on the previous evening remained the identical, including Gérald Darmanin as judicial department head and the culture minister as cultural affairs leader.

The responsibility of financial affairs leader, which is crucial as a fragmented legislature struggles to approve a financial plan, went to a Macron ally, a Macron ally who had formerly acted as economic sector leader at the start of his current leadership period.

Surprise Selection

In a shocking development, the president's political partner, a Macron ally who had worked as economy minister for seven years of his presidency, was reappointed to cabinet as defence minister. This enraged officials across the political divide, who saw it as a sign that there would be no questioning or change of the president's economic policies.
